Rose Gray is troubled, and has always been alone. When she reunites with her long lost sister, Sonnet, her mental fragility snaps to the point of murder. Sonnet has all but given up on her now. Circumstances - beyond unusual and strange - have made Rose the way she is; for not only can she travel through eras, she can decide where to go. For a perfectly sane girl, this could be a gift for Rose, it could be danger for anyone she has ever had the misfortune of meeting. A childhood with gypsies, an apprenticeship with a dark man, and a love affair with a dangerous boy, are what's normal for Rose - as is time spent in Bedlam. Lizzie is an orphaned nurse, resigned to a life of changing bedpans and fluffing pillows at the world's most notorious insane asylum. Finding an old diary proves a welcome distraction from a medical world who doesn't take nurses too seriously in 1931. But falling into the world of the diary's author, Rose Gray, Lizzie is swept into an ever deepening mystery; one that could leave her just another victim. Because, although the diary in Bedlam hospital may be old, Rose is not. And she never really left.

The mark of a good book is when I can't stop thinking of the characters, long after I've stopped reading, or I can't wait to get through my busy day just to get lost, no pun intended, in it. Both Williams' books, Shadows Gray and Shadows Falling had this effect on me. Another mark of a great book is the heightened imagery that sucks you into the world of the story and its characters...Better than watching a good movie (and yes, this trilogy would be great on the big screen). If you love a bit of magical realism, just the right amount of romance, not an overdose of sci-fi, but time travel as an interesting backdrop, and familial issues woven throughout, this is your book. The author's wit is imbued in the characters and her interest in history made for an interesting and authentic read. i did catch a few typos in the first book (none in the second) but that seems to be expected from a book without a huge publisher.....i did notice that her writing matured exponentially in the second book and that just makes me that much more excited to get my hands on the latest book due out soon.

Shadows Falling Melyssa M Williams 9781481853682 Books Reviews

I just finished Shadows Falling and am now a few pages into the third book of this series. This series is innovative and unique. If you are looking for a "non mainstream, not cliche" book, you have found the series! Time travel, a healthful (but not overwhelming) dose of history, and unique characters are just a few of the aspects of this legend of "The Lost." As I neared the end of the book, it wasn't a smart idea to read right before I went to bed because it kept me awake!!! There are just enough shivers down the spine moments to make you keep turning the pages but enough humor to attach you to the characters and keep things lighthearted enough that you don't have any nightmares hopefully )
Whether you are a sci-fi, time travel, history, or just good book lover, I would highly recommend you give these books a place on your shelf!!
The story grabs your attention from the very beginning and keeps the suspense throughout the entire story. I love character stories, and this series is all about the characters! In the first book, we focus on the sister Sonnet and her "family". You feel her desire to become reunited with her sister but still remain loyal to her default "family". In this book the author cleverly focuses on the other sister Rose and tells her side of the story. You really start to understand how she became disillusioned to the point of insanity. And all through the eyes of nurse Lizzie, a similarly "orphaned" character like Rose, but opposite in that she is sane, responsible, wants to help others and doesn't blame others for her disadvantages in life. It has everything suspense, time travel, a little romance, and all with a gothic feel. I can't wait for the third book in the trilogy to be released!
Things I like about this book - it's a reasonably original idea, the story progresses well, the diary elements work within the larger context of the story. Things that drive me insane about this book - don't set it in a really specific timeframe and then have the characters talk like modern day teenagers. I could let it go if it was just the time travelling characters, but everyone seems to be at it. That and a certain Twilighty level of angst take away from the book overall.

I don't know, maybe I'm just a bit too old for these books, but I feel like if the author took her time and worked on some of the dialogue and era issues they could be really good.
This sequel was an absolute thrill from beginning to end! The literary references made my heart happy, being a classic literature lover myself. As well as the history, the witty, and sarcastic nature of the main character made this read a fun adventure. Shadows Falling kept me guessing and creating conclusions of my own, which were totally boring compared to the actual story that the author, Melyssa Williams, so thoughtfully created for us. It's easy to fall in love with this series and the imagination put into the world of the Lost. I can't wait to see what lies ahead for Rose and Luke, as well as Sonnet, Noah and Israel!
I read Shadows Falling immediately after finishing Shadows Gray Melyssa Williams first book. I really liked Shadows Gray, the character of Sonnet Gray and her band of misfits she calls family. In Shadows Gray you're introduced to Sonnet and her quest for her sister Rose that consumes her. Rose was left behind when the rest of the family traveled through time and this loss has haunted the family ever since. In more ways than one. Shadows Falling is the story of Rose Gray and I liked it even better than Shadows Gray, which I did not expect. I won't say too much about the actual plot because I don't want to ruin any surprises, however, just like Shadows Gray, all is not what it seems. Melyssa Williams does a fantastic job pulling you into the world of the Lost and the Gray family in particular. This is a series that grips you and that you miss when it is over. I can't wait until Book Three! In case you're wondering, yes, you do need to read book one Shadows Gray before reading Shadows Falling or you will miss some of the plot twists and back story. Buy Now, Don't Wait, you won't regret it!

(Disclaimer While I do know Melyssa personally I was not provided with any recompense or with a free copy of the Shadows books for my review. My review is entirely my own opinion and Melyssa well deserves the kudos.)
Beautifully written and ok for teens and preteens to read! Attention grabbing for all ages. Unique from other books and picks up history things that make you go look up history. Now just wish the series would continue.
As soon as I finished the first book in the series, Shadows Gray, I hurried to buy book 2. Shadows Falling was just as good, if not better. Creative twists in the story made this one a little darker than the first, yet the relationships between the characters deepened because of it. Just when you think you know where the story is going, you'll find that you were wrong but the alternative was better than you could have imagined. (How does the author come up with this stuff??) Good book. Read it. Share it. Pass it on.
