I have been enjoying Brigid Kemmerer's work and Spark was a good read. I wish so so badly though that Kemmerer would stop using sexual assault as a way for her female characters to be "saved" by young men who have love interests in them. Both in this and the previous book we see the female characters endure this just to be saved by the Merrick brothers who up to that point haven't been awesome to those same characters in many ways and then they are just supposed to trust them fully. The level of assault and the way it's used to connect the characters takes away from so much especially when these girls don't even get a chance to talk about how these assaults effect them, which there is no excuse for as half the book is told from their perspective. I'm just sad that it isn't used as a way to discuss this issue further, which in my opinion means that the assault plot lines are fairly useless. And in a world where women endure this reality... I don't want to dive into a book where sexual assault is used to further a plot line and really for that reason only. I'm also just tired of bad communication being the entire plot. I know they are teens. But like... when Gabriel finally opens up I'd have loved to see that conversation instead of "and then he told he told them everything" as a convenient way to deal with not having to discuss real communication. I know it is YA but I'm just bored with bad communication plots.

All that being said, I enjoyed the first two books. The Merrick brothers are an interesting crew.

Yeah, this is going to be super short because I really really want to start book #4 like right now.
But gosh, I absolutely loved every second of this! From the crisp writing and the slow burn romance to the complex but so riveting relationships among all of the brothers. I was afraid this would follow the typical bad-boy meets good girl cliched storyline, and it does essentially follow that, but both Gabriel and Layne are such well-drawn characters that it all just works . Layne is my new favorite heroine in such a long time. Yeah, she's shy and nerdy, but I love that she is never afraid to call out Gabriel when he's acting like an ass. And how he doesn't fail to see through her excuses either. Her relationship with her family, her dad particularly, I could relate to a lot.

They just both fit together so well, and I enjoyed seeing them grow closer together, and grow up together.

I read a lot of MM now, so I'm used to reading male POVs, but I think this is one of the very few times where it truly felt so authentic and just more real, somehow.

I also loved the supernatural element, seeing Gabriel's affinity with fire, and the compulsive desires that he always struggles to control. I also loved his relationship with his twin Nick and his burgeoning friendship with fellow misfit Hunter. Though I loved the romance, the family relationships are what stood out to me the most, and what I got most invested in. Really excited to continue the series and getting to know each of these boys more.

Gabriel Merrick is my favorite Merrick brother. I loved that this book was in his point of view. I like that we got to see inside of that smartness brain of his. I think his relationship with Layne is super sweet. I just don't like how in the beginning he didn't even realize how pretty she was. He only became attracted to her once he knew more of her back story which I can understand. I just don't think it's realistic how he didn't even have the slightest interest in her before he talked to her. I also found it kind of jarring going from Storm where the whole book was about the elements and the world building with them and this book was more of a love story with the elements thrown in at he end. I'm not complaining it just made me like Gabriel more it's just kind of confusing. I can't wait to read Spirit, maybe it will help me appreciate Hunter more because right now he could use some redeeming after how the first two books ended.
While I liked the first installment in this series, this second book is even better! During this installment there was a lot of character development and I became more connected with all the characters. Not only do the characters develop, the magic does as well. Throughout the book there are more examples of the boys’ powers and how powerful they are. I can see why the Guides are concerned about their abilities and how things could get out of control (especially when you have an explosive temper like Gabriel’s).

This series is just as much about the romance as it is about the paranormal. This keeps the more balanced with action and adventure even with the swoon-worthy romance bits. Throughout this book the boys’ problems become even more complicated. Gabriel is believed to be an arsonist. While we know he isn’t starting the fires, he needs to convince the rest of the world that he isn’t and that isn’t easy to do.

Gabriel Merrick. This boy really made me blush and I have a feeling Brigid Kemmerer’s books will continue to make me blush as we go along. This Merrick brother is so believable. He is angry and spits fire most of the time, but he is insecure and has good intentions underneath. The brothers’ relationship is fantastically written and I’ve wondered if the author has brothers because the relationship seemed to be so realistic.

I especially enjoyed Michael Merrick’s character reveal in this book because he is less like a cardboard cutout. In Storm he seemed like just an overprotective older brother, but we get so much more of his personality in this book. (Now I cannot wait to get to his book and am also terrified because it is called Sacrifice)

Layne is also a great addition to the gang and she reminds me so much of myself. Honestly I expected her to be completely different, but the Gabriel and Layne are fantastic together. She has her own voice and stands out from Becca. So far Kemmerer has done a great job making the romances distinct from one another and the heroines are distinctly different.

Paranormal romance is one of my favorite genres because it is so fun and I’m really enjoying this series so far. Brigid Kemmerer has added a great element to her books as well by covering tough topics too. She covers bullying, students with disabilities, slut shaming as well many other topics. To me, this makes the series even better and gives it a depth and believability other series don’t have.

So since I’ve gushed so much you may be wondering why I didn’t give this book a five star rating. Personally, I don’t think the Guilds are explained well enough which makes them faux scary. They are lurking around in the background but aren’t a real threat yet, but it seems like they should be considering how much they are mentioned. Also some plot points are just too predictable. I want a few surprises!
