"Michael Malgeri has created a series of small books that could change the way an entire generation views individualism, profit-making, and capitalism. The books are easy to read and fun to discuss with children of all ages. They capture the imagination and explain the moral foundations of the free society with just a few words and pictures. Adam Smith and Milton Friedman would have approved!"
Joseph Bast, President, The Heartland Institute.

Warm This! Bedtime Stories about Capitalism edition by Michael Malgeri Michael Schultz Children eBooks

Author Michael Malgeri and illustrator Michael Schultz team up again to create a book that can be considered "more than just a children's book." If you like to not only entertain your kids with a good story, but also help them understand otherwise complicated issues, then don't go past this book.

`Warm This,' the second sequel to Malgeri's much-praised `Johnny Profit' series of "children's books on capitalism," takes the young reader to an enlightening journey beyond the planet of Kimor. As with the previous two books, the story is deftly woven to teach kids or at least stimulate them to reflect on important "normally adult topics" of fair trade and capitalism. You'll find the familiar characters Johnny Profit and his friend Ben engage in the exploration of another planet, which happens to be our very own Earth. However, when the two "discover" that Earth is in ruins, with remnants of its human civilization nothing more than scattered bands of barely surviving hut-dwellers, they got so curious that they decide to stay a while and find out the reason--this despite facing a certain risk.

This interesting twist in the story forces a major reaction from its young readers: why and how did Earth "die" like that? The ensuing talk on the extreme importance of caring for our environment, vis-a-vis the sheer value of keeping trade and business honest and decent, can be a fertile ground for further discussions: it opens up a lot of opportunities for the parent to tell kids the truth concerning our environment without scaring them away or intimidating them with big words and concepts.

Needless to say, `Warm This' has a distinct focus on environmental issues. While the first books, `Johnny Profit' and `Johnny's Gold' had a stronger emphasis on the values of decent profit-making, the life-saving importance of new and useful ideas, and honesty and fairness in trade, this third book by Malgeri takes on a scientific approach in discussing the situation of our planet. It may also arouse young readers to ask environment-related questions that are very relevant today, such as those concerning global warming and the various issues that currently surround it.

However, expect the kids to ask a lot of question about words like "anti-matter" or "bio-computer"--the questions are all good and you should patiently answer them as helpful as possible--if the children are not asking questions, then they're not interested enough.

Despite its relatively "heavier" subject, `Warm This' doesn't fail to deliver the usual thrill and fun. It is provocative, yet it's still entertaining. What child doesn't love a spaceship, right? But most importantly, the story leaves on a hopeful note--it's not all bleak. One of the best lines in the book, for example, is "a society without spirit was doomed to failure"--this line alone is pregnant with meaning and can stimulate a whole new discussion on life-long lessons you can impart to children.

Overall, this is another great addition to your collection of children's books. And hey, it's the same author-illustrator team that created the ground-breaking book, `Johnny Profit.' If you've seen the first book, expect this second sequel to be as good, if not even better.
